The Kansas City Chiefs celebrated a historic milestone as Travis Kelce scored his 84th career touchdown against the Denver Broncos,
surpassing Priest Holmes for the most in franchise history and cementing his legacy with the team.
Entering the game, Kelce was tied with Holmes at 83 touchdowns as he broke the tie in the fourth quarter on a 21-yard reception from Patrick Mahomes, giving the Chiefs a temporary 19-16 lead and marking his fourth receiving touchdown of the season.
The franchise immediately recognized the milestone as the Chiefs posted online to celebrate their legendary player.
“The best TE ever just keeps getting better,” the team said via X.com, formerly Twitter whilst on Instagram they wrote, “Congrats to the best TE in history!”
The statements emphasized Kelce’s status among NFL tight ends historically as he now ranks fifth all-time in touchdowns by a tight end behind Antonio Gates, Tony Gonzalez, Rob Gronkowski, and Jimmy Graham.
He also ranks third in receptions and receiving yards among tight ends. His career trajectory positions him for eventual Hall of Fame consideration but despite the personal milestone, he could not secure a win as KC lost 22-19 at Empower Field at Mile High, falling to 5-5.
The defeat damaged their streaks of nine consecutive AFC West titles and ten straight playoff appearances as quarterback Patrick Mahomes passed for 276 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
Despite giving the Chiefs a fourth-quarter lead, the defense allowed Wil Lutz of Denver to tie with a 54-yard field goal and win with a 35-yard kick, sealing the defeat.
Kelce had a strong performance despite the loss. He recorded nine receptions for 91 yards and scored the 84th career touchdown on a 21-yard pass from Mahomes. Through ten games, he has 50 receptions for 631 yards, averaging 12.6 yards per catch.
